Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston, remembered for his integrity and devotion to fairness in the legal system over a career that spanned most of his long life, has died. Houston was 91.

Stewart elected to the Alabama State Supreme Court in 2018. She was previously appointed by then-Gov. Bob Riley to the 13th Circuit Court of Alabama in 2006, becoming the first female jury trial judge in Mobile. Stewart was the first female president of the Circuit Judges Association, receiving a J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School in 1992.

The Supreme Court decision was a win for voting rights groups who note Alabama’s congressional map included one majority Black district out of seven.

Alabama will hold races for its seven congressional districts, as well as a race for chief justice of the Supreme Court. There's also one state measure on the ballot dealing with the Franklin County Board of Education.
